What to Look For When Buying Disc Golf Starter Sets

Key factors weighted in our ranking system

Number of Discs and Disc Types

Consider how many discs are included and if they offer a good variety of drivers, mid-ranges, and putters. Sets like the GOOSO Disc Golf Set with Bag (12 PCS) or the VEVOR Disc Golf Set (12 PCS) provide a comprehensive selection for beginners to learn different throws.

Inclusion of a Bag or Basket

Some starter sets come with a convenient carrying bag, which is essential for transporting your discs to the course. While not a 'starter set' in the traditional sense, the MVP Disc Sports Black Hole Lite 24-Chain Disc Golf Basket Target is an excellent complementary purchase for practicing at home, offering a significant upgrade to your disc golf experience.

Brand Reputation and Disc Quality

Opt for reputable brands known for durable and consistent discs, even in starter sets. Dynamic Discs, with their Prime Burst Disc Golf Starter Sets (3-Pack and 6-Pack), is a well-regarded brand that offers quality discs suitable for new players.

Value for Money

Evaluate the overall package against its price, considering the number of discs, included accessories, and brand quality. The Dynamic Discs Prime Burst Disc Golf Starter Set, 3-Pack, offers an excellent entry point at a very affordable price, while the GOOSO Disc Golf Set with Bag provides a more complete package for a slightly higher investment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions for shoppers comparing Disc Golf Starter Sets

What's the ideal number of discs for a beginner's starter set?

For most shoppers, a set with 3-6 discs is a great starting point, offering a driver, mid-range, and putter. However, if you want more variety and options to experiment with different flight paths, sets like the GOOSO Disc Golf Set with Bag (12 PCS) or the VEVOR Disc Golf Set (12 PCS) provide an excellent comprehensive introduction.

Do I really need a disc golf bag with my starter set?

While not strictly necessary for your very first outing, a disc golf bag is incredibly convenient for carrying your discs, water, and other essentials on the course. The GOOSO Disc Golf Set with Bag is a standout choice as it includes a bag, making it a complete package for new players.

Can I practice disc golf at home with a starter set?

You can certainly practice throwing techniques with your starter set at home, but for a true disc golf experience, a basket is invaluable. The MVP Disc Sports Black Hole Lite 24-Chain Disc Golf Basket Target is an excellent, highly-rated option for home practice, allowing you to work on your putting and approach shots.

Are more expensive starter sets always better?

Not necessarily. While higher-priced sets might offer more discs or a bag, the quality of the discs themselves is paramount. For example, the Dynamic Discs Prime Burst Disc Golf Starter Set, 3-Pack, is very affordable but still provides quality discs from a reputable brand, making it a fantastic value for beginners.
